Celebrates Community & Connection

The 2026 Tamboran Resources Top End Cup has once again brought communities together in Katherine, celebrating grassroots Rugby League, regional participation and the opportunities sport creates for young people and families across Northern Australia.

Held on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October at Katherine Sports Ground, the carnival welcomed players, coaches, match officials, volunteers, families and supporters from across the Northern Territory and neighbouring regions for two days of football, friendship and community spirit.

Building on the success of previous years, the 2026 carnival continued to strengthen its reputation as an important regional sporting event, bringing together communities from Darwin, Katherine, Alice Springs, Elcho Island and Kununurra.

With junior Rugby League, representative pathway opportunities and the introduction of Touch Football, this year's event represented another positive step in the continued development of the Top End Cup.

Celebrating Junior Rugby League

At the heart of the carnival were the Under 10 and Under 12 junior competitions, providing young players with the opportunity to enjoy Rugby League in a positive, inclusive and supportive environment.

Delivered through modified, non-competitive formats, these age groups placed an emphasis on participation, skill development, teamwork and enjoyment rather than results.

The carnival also recognised the importance of sportsmanship, respect and positive behaviour through its Spirit of the Game awards.

Congratulations to Alice Springs Brothers (Under 10) and Palmerston Raiders (Under 12), who were recognised for demonstrating the values that make community Rugby League so special.

These awards celebrate more than what happens on the field. They acknowledge the attitudes, behaviours and contributions that help create safe, welcoming and enjoyable sporting experiences for everyone.

Under 14 RISE Pathways on Show

The Top End Cup also provided an opportunity for emerging players to showcase their development through the Under 14 RISE Boys and Girls competitions.

The RISE program supports the development of young Rugby League players through quality coaching, competitive opportunities and exposure to representative pathway environments.

Congratulations to Darwin City RISE, who were crowned champions in both the Under 14 Boys and Under 14 Girls divisions.

Importantly, the involvement of regional teams continues to demonstrate the value of providing meaningful playing and development opportunities closer to home, while strengthening connections between Rugby League communities across Northern Australia.

Touch Football Joins the Top End Cup

A significant milestone for the 2026 carnival was the introduction of Touch Football, further supporting NRL NT's vision of creating participation opportunities through Touch, Tag and Tackle.

Working collaboratively with Touch Football NT and the Katherine Touch Football Association, the carnival expanded its sporting program and created additional opportunities for players and communities to participate.

The inclusion of Touch Football reflects a broader commitment to providing accessible, enjoyable and flexible participation options for people of different ages, abilities and sporting backgrounds.

It also created valuable conversations about future collaboration between the Katherine and Kununurra sporting communities.

NRL NT, together with the Northern Territory Rugby League Referees Association and regional stakeholders, is keen to explore opportunities that strengthen these connections through coordinated activities, workforce development and safe, sustainable program delivery.

Recognising the People Behind the Game

Community sport relies on the commitment of people who generously contribute their time, knowledge and energy to create opportunities for others.

The 2026 Top End Cup recognised two individuals whose contributions helped make the carnival a success.

Kodie Woods – Referee of the Carnival

Congratulations to Kodie Woods, recognised for their contribution to officiating throughout the carnival.

Match officials play an essential role in creating safe, fair and enjoyable sporting environments, and their development remains an important priority for Rugby League across the Territory.

Kallum Peckham-McKenzie – Volunteer of the Carnival

Congratulations to Katherine Rugby League's Kallum Peckham-McKenzie, recognised for his outstanding volunteer contribution.

Kallum's efforts reflect the commitment and community spirit that underpin regional Rugby League.

NRL NT also acknowledges the many volunteers, club representatives, administrators, coaches, match officials and families whose collective efforts helped deliver the event.

Supporting Katherine and Regional Communities

Beyond the football field, the Tamboran Resources Top End Cup continues to provide an opportunity to bring people together and support regional communities.

The carnival encourages families and visitors to travel, connect with local communities and experience what Katherine has to offer.

NRL NT remains committed to developing the Top End Cup as a sustainable regional sporting event that delivers positive outcomes for participants, clubs, local businesses and the broader community.

The continued involvement of teams from across the Territory and neighbouring Western Australia highlights the opportunity to strengthen regional sporting connections and attract additional participation from across Northern Australia in future years.

Thank You to Our Partners and Supporters

The successful delivery of the 2026 Tamboran Resources Top End Cup would not have been possible without the support of our valued partners and the many organisations and individuals involved.

NRL NT extends its sincere appreciation to Tamboran Resources, our naming rights partner, for its continued commitment to supporting regional Rugby League and community participation.

We also acknowledge the valuable contributions of Kennards Hire, Top End Print and Under Armour, whose support assisted in delivering the carnival.

A special thank you to Katherine Rugby League Club, Touch Football NT, the Katherine Touch Football Association, the Northern Territory Rugby League Referees Association, participating clubs and teams, volunteers and everyone who contributed to another successful event.

More Than Just a Game

NRL NT General Manager Tony Crowe said the Top End Cup continued to demonstrate the important role sport plays in connecting people and creating opportunities.

"The Top End Cup is about much more than what happens on the football field. It's about bringing families and communities together, creating opportunities for young people and building relationships that extend well beyond the final whistle.

Seeing teams travel from across the Territory and neighbouring regions, the introduction of Touch Football and the commitment of our volunteers and match officials reinforces why events like this are so important.

We have a genuine opportunity to continue building the Top End Cup into something special for regional communities across Northern Australia.

As I often say, it takes a village to raise a child. In Rugby League, it takes a community to build a club."

The 2026 Tamboran Resources Top End Cup has once again demonstrated the strength of community sport and the opportunities that can be created through collaboration, shared commitment and a passion for participation.

TRL Stadium was the scene of a memorable day of rugby league on Saturday, September 12, with four Darwin rugby league grand finals producing contrasting contests, dramatic finishes and some outstanding individual performances. A strong breeze blowing diagonally across the stadium added another layer of difficulty for players throughout the day, but it did little to diminish the quality of the football as the 2026 season reached its conclusion. Brothers complete an unbeaten season in style Darwin Brothers saved their most emphatic performance for last, defeating the Palmerston Raiders 42-0 to claim a third consecutive DABSCO Men's Premiership. It was the perfect conclusion to an unbeaten season and a campaign in which Brothers transformed their already formidable attacking reputation by developing a defensive resilience that proved just as important. Palmerston entered the grand final full of confidence following a strong finals campaign and matched Brothers for intensity during a brutal opening 20 minutes. The Raiders' defence was particularly impressive early, absorbing repeated pressure from the Brothers forwards and refusing to concede an easy opening. The deadlock was finally broken when Player of the Match Nick Yarran entered the contest and immediately provided the spark Brothers needed. His footwork from acting half exposed tiring defenders and he opened the scoring. From there, the floodgates opened. Brothers found their rhythm and added six more unanswered tries to race away to a 42-0 victory. Elijah Coombes and Kyro Ahmat were outstanding up front, while Drew Tobin provided a huge workload through the middle. Elijah Urirau was another tireless performer, working relentlessly in the back row. The spine of Northam, Kurnoth, Caulton and James continually threatened the Raiders' defence, with Jarrod Northam's service from acting half giving Brothers' runners the timing and space to exploit defensive weaknesses. Aaron Kurnoth and Bradley Hansen produced a memorable individual battle that reflected the grit and determination of both teams, while the Brothers bench again proved decisive. Yarran's impact was particularly telling, exploiting tired defence and providing the injection of energy to open the scoring. Emil Jawai's powerful runs through the middle, Jonas Niki's hard-hitting work and Connor Williams' versatility further underlined the depth of the premiers. For coach Leon Cleal, the victory marked another chapter in the remarkable Brothers era and their third straight DABSCO title. After an unbeaten season, a dominant points differential and a grand final clean sheet, the Brothers finished 2026 as undisputed champions.

The Northern Territory’s rugby league finals race reaches its penultimate stage on Saturday, with three senior Preliminary Finals to be played at TRL Stadium with Grand Final places on the line. The action beginning at 3pm with the Gatley Shield clash between the Litchfield Bears and Palmerston Raiders. Bears face daunting Raiders challenge The Bears enter the Gatley Shield Preliminary Final with plenty of momentum after eliminating the Northern Sharks 26-14 last weekend. They face a significant challenge, however, against a Palmerston side that finished the regular season as minor premiers. The Raiders suffered a 22-16 defeat to Darwin Brothers in last week’s Major Semi-Final, sending them into Saturday’s do-or-die encounter. History also favours Palmerston. The Raiders have won all three meetings with the Bears this season, including a comprehensive 38-6 victory in Round 12. Litchfield will be hoping their recent form, along with the potential return of several qualified players, can help turn the tables when it matters most. The Bears will need to overcome both the season record and the minor premiers if they are to secure a place in the Gatley Shield decider. Bears and Dragons renew rivalry The Tru-Flow Services Women’s Premiership Preliminary Final at 4.30pm promises another compelling chapter in what has been a remarkably tight season between Litchfield and Nightcliff. The Dragons finished second, just one competition point ahead of the third-placed Bears, setting up a contest between two sides that have been virtually inseparable throughout the season. Nightcliff pushed the dominant Sisters last weekend, trailing just 16-10 at half-time before eventually going down. The Bears, meanwhile, produced one of their strongest finals performances, accounting for the Palmerston Raiders 34-10. Saturday’s encounter will be the fourth meeting between the sides this season. The Bears claimed a narrow 22-20 victory in Round 15, while the Dragons won their Round 5 and Round 10 encounters. With a host of representative-quality players across both line-ups, the battle through the halves could prove decisive. For the winner, there is little time to celebrate. Waiting in next week’s Grand Final is the formidable Darwin Brothers outfit. The match will be broadcast on Kommunity TV. Sharks and Raiders collide in men’s thriller The final game of the day, at 5.50pm, sees second-placed Northern Sharks take on fourth-placed Palmerston Raiders in the DABSCO Men’s Premiership Preliminary Final. The Sharks have been one of the competition’s most consistent teams throughout the season, establishing themselves behind the undefeated Brothers juggernaut. Palmerston, meanwhile, has hit its stride at precisely the right time. The Raiders left their charge until late in the season and built considerable momentum before Brothers halted them. Their run also included a dominant 38-6 victory over the Sharks in Round 11. The battle of the spines could be one of the defining features of Saturday’s contest, with the Sharks expected to rely on Mick, Calkin, Colling and Collie, while Palmerston counters with Houlihan, Walsh, Pott and Hansen. There should also be plenty of attacking flair out wide, with the Shark’s Zaro and Rasaku set to challenge the Raider’s Bulumaca and Sorowale. The forward battle promises to be equally important, with both sides boasting powerful packs capable of dictating the tempo of the contest. The Raiders have already demonstrated their ability to eliminate highly fancied opponents and will enter the match believing they can continue their run as the competition’s giant killers. The game will also be broadcast on Kommunity TV. Brothers await While Saturday’s winners will earn their places in the Grand Finals, one team can sit back and watch the drama unfold. Darwin Brothers have already secured Grand Final berths in the Gatley Shield, Tru-Flow Services Women’s Premiership and DABSCO Men’s Premiership. The Brothers juggernaut now waits patiently for its three opponents to emerge. With everything on the line, TRL Stadium is set for a huge afternoon and evening of Northern Territory rugby league.
