The 2026 NRL NT Territory Junior Championships delivered an outstanding showcase of emerging rugby league talent, with the Northern Territory’s best Under 16 players taking centre stage at TRL Stadium, Darwin.

Across a full day of high-quality competition, teams representing Darwin City, Southern Heat, Katherine and Gove United competed with intensity, skill and pride, highlighting the continued growth and strength of rugby league pathways across the Territory.

The boys competition opened with a dominant performance from Gove United, setting the tone early with a 30–4 victory over Darwin City. Southern Heat responded strongly in Game 3, defeating Darwin City 16–8 in a disciplined and physical contest.

In the girls division, Southern Heat showcased their class with a 16–0 win over Darwin City in Game 2, underlining the continued rise in female participation and performance standards across the Northern Territory.

As the tournament progressed, the level of competition lifted, culminating in two thrilling Grand Finals that reflected the quality and resilience of all participating teams.

The Under 16 Girls Final delivered one of the standout moments of the carnival, with Southern Heat securing a dramatic 12–8 Golden Point victory over Darwin City in a gripping contest that went down to the wire.

The Under 16 Boys Final followed suit, with Gove United claiming the 2026 title after a hard-fought 20–16 Golden Point win against Southern Heat, showcasing composure and execution under pressure.

Individual performances were equally impressive across the Championships. Mariah Franey (Darwin City) was named Under 16 Girls Player of the Final, while Ellie Pullman earned Player of the Championships honours for her consistency and impact throughout the tournament.

In the boys division, Lorenzo Whittnall (Gove United) was recognised as Player of the Final following a match-winning performance, with Dylan Stanley (Southern Heat) awarded Player of the Championships for his outstanding contributions across the carnival.

NRL NT General Manager Tony Crowe said the Championships continue to play a critical role in developing the Territory’s next generation of players.

"The Territory Junior Championships are a key pillar of our pathway system that is now being supported by the Dolphins NRL organisation, providing young athletes with the opportunity to represent their regions and compete at a high level," Crowe said.

"What we saw across the weekend was a strong reflection of the growth of rugby league in the Northern Territory from participation numbers through to the quality of performance on the field."

NRL NT Pathways Coordinator Duncan MacGillivray said “The 2026 Territory Junior Championships were a fantastic showcase of the talent, passion, and resilience coming through our game. It was inspiring to see athletes not only competing strongly, but also embracing the opportunity to learn, connect, and grow.

Programs like RISE with the support of the Dolphins continue to play a vital role in supporting that journey, providing clear and meaningful pathways for our young players to develop both on and off the field. Equally important is the tireless commitment of our volunteer coaches, medical staff, and team managers. Their dedication, guidance, and care make these championships possible and are essential in nurturing our young athletes. We are truly grateful for their contribution.

With this combined effort, the future of rugby league in the Territory is incredibly bright, and it’s exciting to see the next generation stepping forward with such confidence and intent.”

The Championships also serve as a selection platform for the NT Titans representative program, with standout players progressing into further development opportunities and national pathways.

With continued support from the Northern Territory Government and key partners such as the Dolphins, NRL NT remains committed to creating inclusive, high-quality opportunities for young Territorians to engage in rugby league and pursue their potential.
